The Lady Boys of Bangkok – Beauties and the Beats, Review

★★★

Sabai Pavilion,Theatre Big Tops, Fountainbridge (Venue 186)| Aug 7-31| 18:45 21:00| £22.00-£26.00

With the tent festooned with lights, the plush red velvet curtain ready to go up and everyone sitting at their tables. The Lady Boys theme song “the boys are back in town” starts booming over the speakers.

With plenty of glitz, glamour and extravagant costumes, there is no mistaking the Lady Boys arrival on stage. Lip-syncing and performing choreographed dance routines to classic songs, in this cabaret style performance.

However, the act was let down by several costume malfunctions, some out of step dancing and sound cues that made it unclear when an act had finished. A lack lustre performance from the back row also detracted from the sheen and polished performance of their counterparts in the front.

Nevertheless, the Sound of Music tribute had spectators singing along. Followed by a rousing Village People medley complete with joyful applause. With the solo Tina Turner impersonation stealing the show. Consequently, by the end of the night the tent was dancing and swaying away to the special Scottish finale.
