EIFF: The Uprising, Review

Peter Snowdon’s self-shot documentary ‘The Uprising’ is extremely powerful and focuses on the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings.

‘The Uprising’ brings together a series of unimaginable images, shot by several activists on the threatening streets. The images are captured in Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Libya, Syria, and Yemen.

The bigger picture is getting their voices heard on a larger scale, however after 30-years of oppression under a brutal dictator, the people are left to deal with democratic self-governance and living in poverty.

This feature-length doc shows the truth of what’s really happening through the eyes of citizens, before it hits news stations across the world. It pulls together shocking footage from brutal police crackdowns, images of protestors to shocking images of destroyed cities. It creates a pan-Arab revolution that, for the time being, exists only on the screen.

Through the use of amateur mobile footage, it gives the viewer an emotional, but real experience as you’re taken down a dark route of brutal innocent killings of mistreated long-term residents and citizens.

‘The Uprising’ is showing on 26th and 29th of June at Filmhouse, Cameo and Cineworld in Edinburgh.
