EIFF 2015: Under Milk Wood

todayJune 20, 2015

Background

★★★

Considering I watched A Dylan Thomas biopic at last years EIFF (Set Fire To The Stars) it seemed only right to watch an adaptation of one of his 1954 radio play ‘Under Milk Wood’ at this year’s festival.

The film drops you into the dreams of the peculiar residents of Llareggub, including the music obsessed ‘Organ Morgan’, ‘Mrs. Ogmore-Pritchard’ fixated with her dead husbands, while the local school teacher conjures way’s to kill his wife in his mind. When daylight arrives and the residents wake up director Kevin Allen keeps you in a dreamlike state jumping from character to character with pace to live 24hr’s of Welsh village life.

Having never heard the original work, or the 1972 film version I was not sure what to expect when I sat down to watch but was pleasantly surprised. If you are on the hunt for something different to see at this years festival I can recommend it, but I warn you, with dreamlike visuals and poetic multi-layered narration ‘Under Milk Wood’ may leave you feeling like you have had one to many in ‘The Sailors Arms’
