A Plethora Of Pleasance Pleasures

todayAugust 3, 2013

Background

At a time of the morning far too early for festival season a gaggle of press including some of team BDFM were ushered into Pleasance Grand for a sampling of what the Pleasance venues and their friends have on offer at this years festival.

Joe LycettJoe Lycet

Our host for the event was Joe Lycett, you can see why his show was a sell out last year (and a nominee for best newcomer at last years festival) For this years festival he tells people to expect “exasperated tales of confusing customer service and fewer stories about my penis, Possibly.”

A great compare and whipped the crowd up (as much as you can for a press gathering) would love to see his show in full.

GECKO  – Missing

First up was a piece of dance theatre by performing group GECKO. ‘Missing’ follows the story of Lilly as she unearths her past.

This looks visually stunning and well staged, look out for the very creepy puppet!

Colin Hoult: CharacthorseColin Hoult

Introduced by no other than Sir Patrick Stewart (possibly not him) was Colin Hoult and a selection of the characters from his show ‘Characthorse’  including a Warlock with a surprising ability…

Colin is great at changing between characters and was brilliant at winding up members of the audience.

BLAM!BLAM!

Another incredible dance theatre act BLAM! The show is based around 4 office workers who to escape the day to day boredom of admin work invent a game which sees them turn their office into a massive prop as they change from aliens, superheroes and blockbuster movie villains.

We were treated to a gangster style card (post it note) game which turns into a car (office chair) chase across the city, an interesting performance that I am sure would be a fun watch.

A fresh take on circus was our next treat. Featuring 7 performers with various talents including it is a massive circus cabaret featuring a daring escape from……cling film.

Another show to see if you are looking for something a bit different from stand up at this years festival.

Nick HelmNick Helm

To finish off our Pleasance sample platter we had Nick Helm who had an entrance, which even upstaged Pleasance Artistic Director Anthony Alderson’s fair to say a number of the audience at the front row had singed eyebrows.  His show is a mix of stand up, music and poetry.

Not for the easily offended but a good act to see. Worth while seeing for the entrance alone!
