6th January 1969 some 56yrs ago the Mainline railway that ran through Midlothian was closed to passenger traffic as part of Dr Beaching’s railway cuts. There were several moves to reinstate the line, but it wasn’t until the formation of the Campaign for Borders Rail was formed in the 1990’s at Newcastleton in the Borders did things start to move forward, culminating in the reopening of part of the line from Edinburgh to Tweedbank in 2015.
Geoff Ruderham spoke to the current Chairperson of the Campaign, Marion Short during the Mid Morning programme on the anniversary, about what they are currently engaged in and what their hopes are for the future of rail travel in our part of the world.
